Cubs Launch Historic Rally
SOUTH BEND – After trailing for seven and a half innings on Saturday evening, the South Bend Cubs rebounded for seven runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to sneak away with an improbable 12-11 victory over the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Four Winds Field.
Eleven Cubs’ batters came to the plate in the final half inning, with only one failing to reach base. Donnie Dewees collected two hits during the rally, including the game-ending RBI single that scored Alberto Mineo with the walk-off score. Dewees and three other Cubs drove in a pair of base runners in the contest, with Eddy Martinez leading the way with three RBIs, whilst going three for four from the dish.
Peter Maris led the way for the Hot Rods offense with two hits and three RBIs on the evening. Bowling Green held an 11-5 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, had a 7-2 lead after three and left seven runners on base. Kevin Padio added four hits and two RBIs, and David Olmedo-Barrera added a pair of RBIs.
The series continues at Four Winds Field tomorrow, first pitch scheduled for 2:05pm. South Bend will send Carson Sands (6-2) to the mound and will be opposed by Jose Mujica (4-3) for Bowling Green.
