Seventh Inning Stretcher! Cubs Body Slam TinCaps [VIDEO]
FORT WAYNE – South Bend rose from the mat, using a sudden burst of energy to plate four runs in the seventh inning of a 5-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps Thursday night at Parkview Field.
On Professional Wrestling Night at the park, WWE Hall of Famer Hacksaw Jim Duggan was in the house. But it was the visiting Cubs that pulled its best Hulk Hogan, rising from the ashes of near defeat to get that late revival.
The Cubs used Andruw Monasterio’s two-run triple to take a 3-2 lead, then gained some cushion with an RBI single from Donnie Dewees and RBI double from Eddy Martinez. Monasterio, playing in his first game with the Cubs, was 2-5 at the dish and doubled in his first at-bat.
Fort Wayne (6-9 second half, 42-43 overall) snatched a 2-1 lead in the fourth, fell behind 5-2 in the top of the seventh and cut within two in the home seventh, only to drop the finale and split the four-game series with the Cubs (11-4, 52-32).
In his first outing in the San Diego Padres organization since being acquired June 30 from the Miami Marlins, TinCaps starter Chris Paddack tossed four innings of one-run ball. The Texan fanned six — five with his devastating changeup — and didn’t allow a walk.
The TinCaps picked him up in the bottom of the fourth when catcher Austin Allen laced a two-run double into the right-field corner to score third baseman Carlos Belen and first baseman Brad Zunica and propel Fort Wayne ahead 2-1.
TinCaps right fielder Jhonatan Peña led off the bottom of the inning with a solo home run to the left-field seats and carved the margin to 5-3. Then, Fort Wayne threatened with two runners aboard, but South Bend reliever Tyler Peeitzmeier escaped further trouble.
Cubs starter Casey Bloomquist (W, 6-4) allowed three runs on nine hits in 6.1 innings.
TinCaps reliever Blake Rogers (L, 1-2) allowed four runs on eight hits in three frames.
South Bend right-hander Dillon Maples (S, 1) worked a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Cubs will return home Friday for a four-game series with Bowling Green amid the buzz of Chicago Cubs All-Star center fielder Dexter Fowler heading to the Bend for a rehab assignment. Fowler will play at least Friday and Saturday in South Bend, possibly longer depending on his progress.
Fort Wayne will visit West Michigan for a four-game set starting Friday night.
