Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to be Held for Lake City Greenway Extension
WINONA LAKE — A portion the Heritage Trail, part of the Lake City Greenway in Winona Lake, has been extended over one mile. On Friday, July 1 at 10 a.m., a ribbon cutting ceremony will take place to celebrate the Heritage Trail Greenway extension on land deeded from Grace College, Dr. Dane & Mary Louise Miller and the Town of Winona Lake. The ribbon cutting will take place at the beginning of the new extension at the boardwalk along the creek near the end of Boys City Drive.
Lake City Greenway, a paved trail enjoyed by walkers, runners, cyclists and others since 2007, now includes a twelve foot paved path that flows through beautiful land with woods and rolling hills, including a 140 foot boardwalk.
The total project was over $1.25 million with over $900,000 funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) Transportation Enhancement (TE) Fund. Included in the project was land donated to the town for easements through properties owned by the Town of Winona Lake, Dr. Dane & Mary Louise Miller and Grace College & Seminary. The K21 Health Foundation also donated monies to help offset the additional monies that were needed to fix bad soils that occurred early in the project.
“Grace College is pleased to be part of this project. We hope that by extending the trail, even more community members and students will make use of this special feature in our town,” said Dr. Bill Katip, president of Grace College & Seminary.
“The Town of Winona Lake is excited to formally open this new extension to the Heritage Trail. The Heritage Trail has been a real asset and helps improve health, fitness and quality of life. We see phenomenal usage already in the new extension. We are thankful to all our partners that made this possible and look forward to even more trails and sidewalks to connect the community,” said Winona Lake town coordinator Craig Allebach.
Participating in the ribbon cutting will be representatives from the Town of Winona Lake, Grace College & Seminary, Dr. Dane & Mary Louise Foundation, Winona Lake Mountain Bike Trails, K21 Health Foundation, A & Z Engineering and Phend & Brown.
