Otter On Top At IWGA
TERRE HAUTE – 18 year-old Cherise Otter of Bloomington leads the 94th Indiana Women’s Amateur Championship after firing a 1-under-par, 71 at The Country Club of Terre Haute. Defending Champion, Julia Potter of Indianapolis trails by two with two days to play.
“Everything was working for me today,” Otter said. “I have been working on my putter a lot leading up to this event and it finally paid off.”
Otter’s low round was partially made possible by an eagle on her second hole of the day, the par-4, 11th.
“I was about 30 yards out in the rough and I holed out,” Otter said.
Otter is an IHSAA State Champion (’14) and hopes to get a second Indiana Golf career win this week.
“It would mean a lot to me if I were able to win this event,” Otter said. “It would definitely be a confidence booster. I need to stay in the moment the next two days and continue doing what I’m doing.”
Potter, a four-time Women’s Amateur Champion, posted a 1-over-par, 73 today. She looks for her fifth win this week. Potter is a Penn High School graduate.
“I am not going to get caught up by being a couple shots behind,” Potter said. “My goal coming into this week was to make sure I am in contention heading into the final round. That will continue to be my focus.”
Jocelyn Bruch of Carmel also posted 73 today and is currently tied for second.
There are only two other area players in the tournament. North Manchester’s Lindsey Budnik shot a nine-over 81 to sit tied for 22nd, and Mishawaka’s Madison Chesnutt is tied for 45th with her 12-over 84.
Tee times begin tomorrow at 8 a.m.
