Pena Homer Not Enough For ‘Caps
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – For a fourth consecutive game, Jhonatan Peña hit a home run for the TinCaps on Sunday at Bowling Green Ballpark. But for the first time since the All-Star break, Fort Wayne fell to the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 8-5.
With the TinCaps (3-1, 39-35) down 1-0 in the top of the second inning, Peña vaulted a two-run homer over the left-field fence. He’s the first player in TinCaps history to homer in four straight games. Amazingly, the 22-year-old from the Dominican Republic has done this after hitting just a single home run in his first 50 games of the season.
Fort Wayne hitting coach Vinny Lopez, who says Peña is an exceptionally coachable player, had the outfielder recently watch video of Seattle Mariners outfielder Nelson Cruz to study his stance and swing. As a result, Peña has adjusted from a slightly closed stance to a more open stance. The impact has been remarkable. He also singled on Sunday to bump his season average up to .223.
The Hot Rods (1-3, 38-35), however, retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the second.
Third baseman Carlos Belen put the TinCaps in front again with a three-run homer in the third. Soon after that, though, Bowling Green’s starter Genesis Cabrera (W, 7-2) retired 10 in a row.
Meanwhile, the Hot Rods erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against starter Jacob Nix and reliever Blake Rogers (L, 1-1).
After six innings, Fernando Baez replaced Cabrera and struck out four over two innings. Bryan Bonnell (S, 1) tossed a scoreless ninth.
Fort Wayne returns home for a series with Dayton, starting Monday at 7:05 p.m.
