Jerry L. Bretzinger
Jerry L. Bretzinger, 64, of Rochester, died at 6:15 a.m. Thursday, June 23, 2016 at his residence.
In Rensselaer, on July 22, 1951, Jerry L. Bretzinger was born. He was a treasured son of Clarence “Pete” and Annabelle Downs Bretzinger. Growing up he shared his childhood with three brothers. During Jerry’s high school years he was a member of the Bomber’s basketball team. He also held the school record throwing the shot put. In 1970 he graduated from Rensselaer High School.
On November 27, 1971, in Kentland, Jerry married the love of his life Sue Chancellor Bretzinger. As best friends they shared over 44 years of life’s adventures. From their union came three beautiful daughters. The family tree continued to grow with the added blessings of nine wonderful grandchildren. In 1978, the Bretzingers moved to Rochester from Kentland.
A dedicated employee of Rochester Community Schools for two decades, Jerry served as building tech for many years at RHS. Most recently he worked as a member of the Riddle staff, planning to retire next week.
An outdoorsman, Jerry could be seen outside mowing or manicuring his landscape and flower gardens to perfection. He a Sue annually planted a vegetable garden. The autumn harvest was canned and frozen for winter use. They also enjoyed shopping and attending festivals around Indiana.
As an armchair athlete and devoted Boilermaker, Jerry cheered for Purdue. He occasionally attended some of their football and basketball games. He also was a Chicago Cubs and Bears fan too!
Paramount in Jerry’s life was his family. As a grandpa of nine, he cherished their visits and special family celebrations for the holidays birthdays and other special occasions. There was nothing better than spending time with family.
Left to cherish Jerry’s memory are his wife, Sue; three daughters: Cheryl Jones and husband Dave of Rochester; Sarah Brown and husband Jason of LaPorte, Amy Bretzinger of Rochester, nine grandchildren: Stephanie Jones, John Jones, Joey Jones, Olivia Alfrey and husband Simon, Noah Greer, Kirsta Greer, Allison Brown, Madelyn Brown and Makenzie Brown; a brother Rev. James F. Bretzinger and wife Debra of Fowler, step-mother Beulah Bretzinger of Newcastle and his canine companion Riley the multi-colored Yorkie. Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers Richard and Clarence.
A celebration of the life of Jerry L. Bretzinger will be at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 28, 2016 in the Good Family Funeral Home, 1200 West 18th St., Rochester. Pastor James F. Bretzinger will officiate. Friends may visit with the family from 4-7 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2016 and one hour prior to the service in the funeral home.
