Westfield Repeats, City Takes Ninth At Golf State
CARMEL – Westfield made its day one scores stand up, coming back with an equally impressive second day to claim its second straight IHSAA boys golf state championship Wednesday at Prairie View Country Club. The Shamrocks shot a 296 in its second round, paired with the 285 from day one for a 581 final score, four shots better than hard-charging runner-up Hamilton Southeast.
The Shamrocks used a 70 from Johnny Deck as its top score, and held on as Southeast fired the day’s top score of 294 to make it a race to the finish. Drew Alexander and Cedric McAree each shot 72 to lead the Royals, McAree earning the state medalist honor with a 65-72-137. Center Grove’s Noah Gillard was runner-up with a 70-69-139, Deck finishing third at 141.
Columbia City, which shot a 305 in its first day on the course, couldn’t keep pace and turned in a 322 Wednesday to finish at 627 and ninth place overall in the team standings.
The fantastic senior trio of Tyler Green, Spencer Klimek and Cameron Slavich wrapped up their careers at City with the top three scored for the maroon and gold. Klimek shot a 77, Green a 78 and Slavich an 82 in their final rounds as high schoolers. Nick Decker had an 85 and Spencer McCammon had an 88 to conclude the City scores. Decker and McCammon are both just sophomores.
Wrapping up area golfers at the state finals were South Bend St. Joseph’s Tate Heintzelman-Dee at 77 (153), tied for 26th; Plymouth’s Micah Calhoun at 83 (163), tied for 62nd; and Mishawaka Marian’s Augustin Hartnagel at 82 (164), tied for 66th.
