Area Softball Stars Honored By ICGSA
A plethora of players from the area, including Triton standout Taytum Hargrave, have been honored as All-State softball performers for the 2016 season by the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association.
Hargrave, a sophomore star for the Trojans, earned second-team All-State accolades for players in Class 1-A/2-A. Hargrave, who has committed to play at Ohio University, led Triton to a 16-12 mark this Spring and its fourth straight Class 1-A sectional championship.
A handful of area players earned first-team All-State honors from the ICGSA. Headlining the list were the Penn duo of junior Danielle Watson and senior Alyssa Griman for Class 3-A/4-A. The outstanding pair led coach Beth Zachary’s team to a 26-4 record and a Class 4-A state runner-up finish this past weekend. Junior pitcher Watson has committed to Louisville, while senior catcher Griman, who earned the Mental Attitude Award in Class 4-A at the State Finals, will play at Illinois-Chicago.
The trio of seniors Chelsea Huppert from Bremen and the Rochester tandem of Alexa Holland and Becky Malchow were first-team choices for Class 1-A/2-A.
The list of second-team picks in Class 3-A/4-A included sophomore Emily Lipsett of Culver Academies, senior Halle Hixenbaugh of Penn, senior Mackenzie Loge of Concord and junior Elizabeth Bollinger of Mishawaka Marian. Third-team choices included senior Nichole Kirkpatrick of South Bend Riley, senior Brittany Martens of South Bend Adams and senior Lairen Miller of Fairfield.
The Class 1-A/2-A second-team list included senior Shelby Zellmer of Bremen. Earning third-team honors were sophomore Miranda Hettinger of Winamac and senior Micaela Box of Bremen.
