Hot Rods Motor Over Cubs
BOWLING GREEN, KY. – Bowling Green’s pitching was outstanding Sunday afternoon, holding the South Bend Cubs to two hits in a 6-0 win.
Hot Rods starter Michael Velasquez tossed seven innings of one-hit, no-walk ball, striking out eight hitters. Velasquez won his first game of the year, moving his personal record to 1-6 overall. Yoel Espinal and Diego Castillo struck out three to finish out the shutout.
Michael Russell led the winners with a double, homer and drove in two. Russell’s homer in the fourth put the Hot Rods (31-31) up 5-0.
Brandon Lowe had two hits and two runs scored, Zacrey Law had two hits, a walk and one run scored, and Angel Moreno doubled and drove in three.
PJ Higgins had the only two hits on the day for the Cubs (37-25). Carson Sands worked just two innings, giving up three hits, three runs, three walks and struck out two in his first loss in six decisions.
South Bend will head to Dayton for a series that starts Monday night.
