Donald L. Mahoney
Donald L. Mahoney, 80, Argos, died at 1:30 a.m., June 8, 2016 at Memorial Hospital, South Bend, following a brief illness.
Don was born on June 23, 1935 in St. Louis, Mo. to A. Waite Mahoney and Mildred Louise (Flood) Mahoney. He’d lived in the Argos community since 2003, after spending 30 years in Indianapolis.
On Jan. 14, 1966 in Shiremanstown, Penn. he married Nancy L. (Watson) Mahoney who was born and raised in Pennsylvania. They met while he was employed by the CIA and were married shortly after he moved back to Indiana. He enjoyed traveling, and he and Nancy have been to all 50 states, the Caribbean, Europe, South America, Australia, and New Zealand. They have been on mission trips to Texas and Louisiana.
Upon completion of his Purdue degree he accepted a position with the Central Intelligence Agency in McLean, Va., as a Scientific Intelligence Officer. He was employed by the CIA for four years during which time he attended national and international scientific meetings including presenting a paper at an international symposium in The Hague, The Netherlands. He resigned his position at the CIA in 1965 and moved to West Lafayette, when he was hired by MPATI, Inc., a six-state not-for-profit organization that designed, developed, produced and distributed educational materials nationwide. He held the positions of Director of Programs, Professional Development, and Membership. While with MPATI, he participated in the White House Conference on Children where he was a Committee Chairman, and he was a Consultant to the National 4-H Board. He was employed by MPATI until it ceased operation.
He moved to Indianapolis in 1973 where he later began training for his current profession (Financial Planning). His training qualified him for the designation of the American College CLU and ChFC, which he maintains today through continuing education. Don was self-employed as a Financial Planner, owning Mahoney Financial.
In Indianapolis he served as a leader for the Boy Scouts of America and completed their Wood Badge training. He was certified as a USS Indiana Swimming Level 3 Official directing and conducting swim meets. He was elected and served on the MSD of Washington Township School Board and served as President. He became a member of the 500 Earth Sciences Club of Indianapolis in which he has served as Newsletter Editor, two terms as President and more than 30 years as Dealer or Show Chairman for their annual show.
Don returned to the Argos area in 2003 and attended the Argos United Methodist Church where he served as Chairman of the Endowment Committee, was a member of the Building Committee when the Community Life Center was built, was a member of the Trustee and Bereavement Committees, and sings in the choir. He was a certified United Methodist lay speaker and a member of the Argos Community School Board, Argos Planning Commission and Marshall County Economic Development Commission Board.
He was President and Board member of Beach Island Resort Lessees Association in Cocoa Beach, Fla. and continued as the dealer chairman for the annual show hosted by the 500 Earth Sciences Club. Don was a graduate of Argos High School with the class of 1952 and was his class Valedictorian. He then Graduated from Indiana University, was a member of Acacia Fraternity and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in Plant Sciences. He continued his formal education at Purdue where he received his Master’s degree in Biology
Don is survived by his wife: Nancy Mahoney, Argos; his daughters: Barb Mahoney, Indianapolis; and Beverley Mohler and husband Thomas, Plano, Texas; sons: Duncan Mahoney, Los Angeles, Calif.; Alan Mahoney and wife Amber, Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire, England; grandchildren: Bailey Middaugh, Rachel Middaugh, and Emmalee Mohler
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Thomas Mahoney and James Mahoney; grandson: Brennan Mohler.
Friends may visit with the family from 6 p.m.–8 p.m. Friday, June 10, at Earl-Grossman Funeral Home, Argos. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Argos United Methodist Church, Argos with Rev. Heather Foley of the Argos United Methodist Church officiating.
