Kosciusko Farmer’s Market Adds New Kids Program
WARSAW — The Kosciusko County Farmer’s Market has added a new kid’s program. Power of Produce (POP) Club is a nationwide club designed to help children engage in their local food system. This past market, June 4, was the first time the Kosciusko County Farmer’s Market held this club and they will continue providing it each Saturday until July 16.
“It’s all about teaching kids where their food comes from and how powerful produce is in their life,” said Cindy Stier, publicity co-chair for Kosciusko County Farmer’s Market and head of their POP Club.
Each week the market provides an activity, like decorating a market bag and a recipe tasting, like kale chips. Children who sign up for the program also receive a $2 coupon to use for produce at the Farmer’s Market. Future activities include planting tomato plants, veggie art and a scavenger hunt.
The club is held from 10 a.m. until noon each Saturday at the market in downtown Warsaw by the courthouse. Children can sign up for the club and participate in the activities at the booth with the large POP Club banner.
The program is open to children ages 5-12. Halfway through the first market, around 10 kids had signed up for the club. The market will continue with the club on a seven week trial and decide on continuing it next year based on the interest level in the community.
