John Leslie Vogel
John Leslie Vogel, 89, went to meet his Maker on June 1, 2016, at his daughter’s home in St. Augustine, Fla.
He was born on Nov. 8, 1926, in Louisville, Ky. John left the city at age 17 to matriculate at Duke University where he became a member of several honorary clubs including Phi Beta Kappa. He went on to graduate from Duke Medical School in 1950. John met his wife, Tam Latty, there and they were married in Durham, N.C. in 1951. They lived in Atlanta, Ga., where he interned at Grady Hospital and then took residency training in internal medicine at Emory University, Atlanta, Ga. In 1955, they moved to northern Indiana where he joined a clinic in practiced medicine for 33 years. After retiring he and his wife traveled extensively in western Europe, Australia and New Zealand. He enjoyed skiing in Colo., Utah and Austria, backpacking trails in the White Mountains of N.H. John also was an avid canoeist, running the rivers of Mich. and Wis. He also enjoyed and supported classical music, the Civic Theatre and the Civic Ballet.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years; daughter: Jana; and Lesley; grandchildren: Luke; Hayden; Jansen; and a great-grandchild: Kaya.
His ashes will be taken to northern Indiana where there will be a celebration of a life well lived.
