TinCaps Top Cubs Once Again [VIDEO]
FORT WAYNE – The TinCaps locked up the series win over the South Bend Cubs with a 6-2 win against their Hoosier State rival on a warm Wednesday afternoon at Parkview Field.
Fort Wayne (28-25) snapped a 1-1 tie with four runs in the bottom of the fifth en route to the victory in the middle meeting in the three-game set. The TinCaps, who began the day four games out of a playoff spot in the Midwest League’s Eastern Division, narrowed the gap with the first-place Cubs (31-20).
TinCaps center fielder Michael Gettys knotted the game, 1-1, in the home first with an RBI single to center to plate leadoff man Kodie Tidwell.
After five strong innings from starter J.C. Cosme (W, 5-2), who only surrendered one run on five hits and no walks, Fort Wayne surged ahead in the bottom of the fifth. Shortstop Ruddy Giron floated an RBI single to right field with the bases loaded to push the TinCaps up 2-1, and right fielder Jhonatan Peña followed with a two-run single down the left-field line. Peter Van Gansen then coaxed a bases-loaded walk to make it a 5-1 margin.
In his TinCaps debut, left-hander Nathan Foriest, who joined the squad Tuesday from Arizona, followed Cosme with two perfect frames. Carlos Belen’s RBI double in the eighth added an insurance run, and right-hander Trey Wingenter closed out the ballgame with the final two frames.
The TinCaps aim for the sweep Thursday night at Parkview Field.
Next Game between the two clubs is Thursday, June 2, a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. The game will feature a pregame appearance from the Indianapolis Colts “Colts In Motion” tour.
