Cubs Win Streak Halted By Lugs
SOUTH BEND – The Lansing Lugnuts grabbed the final game of their four game series in South Bend with a 5-4 win over the Cubs.
South Bend had a couple of late chance to tie the game but were unable to push across the tying run.
The Cubs scored a run in the eighth on Eloy Jimenez’s RBI single to cut the Lansing lead to 5-4. Jimenez extended his hit streak to 17 games. South Bend loaded the bases with one out by Lugnuts reliever Patrick Murphy struck out Daniel Spingola and Tyler Alamo.
In the ninth Andrew Ely kept the game alive with a two-out double but closer Dusty Isaacs struck out Carlos Sepulveda to end the game.
Lansing opened up a 5-2 lead in the fifth when they scored three times with the help of a two-run home run by Carl Wise off Cubs losing pitcher Greyfer Eregua (1-2). The Cubs reliever allowed three runs in three innings.
South Bend starter Justin Steele lasted just three innings giving up two earned run on six hits while stranding seven runners on base. Steele needed 81 pitches to record nine outs.
Trailing 2-0 in the first, South Bend tied the game on Ian Rice’s two-RBI single. Rice in the four game set versus Lansing went 6-for-12 with five runs scored, two home runs and seven driven in.
South Bend took three out of four games from Lansing and went 5-2 on their seven-game home stand.
