Conference Golf Championships Slated For Saturday
With the spring sports season nearing its end conference tournaments and sectionals are in full swing. This Saturday golfers from both the Hoosier North Athletic Conference and Northern Lakes Conference will compete in their league’s respective tournaments.
Wawasee and Warsaw will look to play the upset role at McCormick Creek as both squads enter tied for second following the regular season round robin.
The Tigers and Warriors both finished 5-2 in NLC play. Wawasee dropped matches to Warsaw (165-171) and Northridge (157-180) while the Tigers came up short against Plymouth (151-165) and lost to Northridge on a tiebreaker.
Northridge finished the round robin with a perfect 7-0 mark and is led by top golfer Luke Morrison. Jared Birr, Austin Schmidt, Kyler Pippenger and Cam Bergman round out the usual lineup for the Raiders.
Warsaw and Wawasee have both shuffled its lineups throughout the year. The Tigers current five are Sam Yeager, Tim Rata, Michael Jensen, Luke Delp and Tommy Meier. Luke Johnson and Jacob LaLonde have also seen time on the varsity five for Warsaw. Yeager has done a fine job at the top of the lineup for the Tigers this year and will remain to be a key player to watch as the postseason begins.
Wawasee’s most recent starting five included Jeffrey Moore, Cal Heinisch, Cameron Adams, Kyle Weideman and Dillon Drake. While the first four have remained consistent, Wawasee has shuffled around the No. 5 spot given an unusually high number of seniors out for this year’s team. Moore is the team’s ace and is a two-time regional qualifier with a good feel for how to handle big tournaments.
Plymouth joined Wawasee and Warsaw at 5-2 and in a logjam for second. The Pilgrims are led by No. 1 Micah Calhoun, though they boast plenty of depth with players like Grant Clady and Hudson Yoder.
The next four teams in the standings were NorthWood (3-4), Memorial (2-5), Concord (1-6) and Goshen (0-7).
Triton will compete in its HNAC this Saturday as well.
Triton has kept its lineup relatively consistent this season behind it top golfer Jordan Anderson. Following Anderson in the lineup are Beau Hepler, Braden Kreft, Isaac Wall and Bryce Swihart. All five players have the capability, and have, led the club in scoring. All five players have shot in the 80-87 range with consistency this spring.
The Trojans will tee off at Mystic Hills in Culver Saturday morning.
