NLC Hopes Still Alive After Baseball Rally
The conference dream is still alive for the Warsaw Tigers baseball team. Needing a rally, Warsaw got it Monday night in defeating Concord, 7-6, with a walk-off single.
Down one, Henry Howard tied the game with a base hit, driving in Zach Witt to tie the game at six all. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Braxton Tennant got the big hit, singling to score Jordan Steffensmeier for the game winner.
Witt, Tennant and Alex Miller all had two hits for the Tigers, while Sterling Hay and Collin Marshall each homered for the home side.
Jordan Jones picked up his fourth win on the hill for Warsaw.
The JV teams played to a football score, with Concord winning 21-17. Warsaw had 15 hits, led by Brandon Perry’s 3-5 night with a double and homer.
The Tigers move to 9-4 in the Northern Lakes Conference, sitting in a flat-footed tie with Plymouth and Northridge, which also both won Monday. NorthWood, which had been ahead by a half game coming into the night, lost to Plymouth, putting the Panthers at 8-4 overall.
The huge game left is Wednesday, with Northridge visiting Plymouth. The winner will finish 10-4 and at least a share of the NLC title. Warsaw hosts Memorial Thursday while NorthWood has a road game at Goshen Wednesday and a make-up with Wawasee Thursday at home, which was suspended in the fourth inning with the Panthers leading 2-0.
Softball Shut Out At Concord
Warsaw was not able to get anything going Monday in a 7-0 softball loss at Concord.
After surprising the Minutemen earlier in the season in it’s Military Appreciation Day at Warsaw, the Tigers were stifled at the plate. Grace Johnson had a lone single as the only offense for the Tigers, which also only drew one walk in the game.
Kiley Austin had much to do with that, firing a masterpiece in striking out seven in the shutout. Austin added two hits at the plate herself, driving in a run and scoring once.
McKenzie Loge reached base four times, Baylee Olinger-Royer had two hits and an RBI, Summer Fleck had two hits and a run scored, and Kaylyn Lipscomb and Skylar Hartpence each scored two runs.
Courtney Chookie took the loss for Warsaw, though only three of the runs were earned as Warsaw committed five errors in the game.
Warsaw falls to 5-17 overall with a non-conference game at Elkhart Central Tuesday before wrapping up Northern Lakes Conference play Thursday at Elkhart Memorial.
