Baseball Team Falls To Panthers
The Warsaw baseball team dropped a 12-2 final in five innings to NorthWood in a key Northern Lakes Conference showdown Wednesday night.
The game, originally scheduled to be played at NorthWood, was moved to Bill Nixon Field in Plymouth due to field conditions.
The host Panthers felt right at home in the different venue. NorthWood outhit Warsaw 11-6 in the league contest.
Warsaw, which saw its three-game NLC winning streak snapped, drops to 10-7 overall and goes to 8-3 in league action. NorthWood improves to 7-3 in NLC play and into a virtual tie with the Tigers atop the conference standings. The Panthers had their NLC game Monday night versus Wawasee suspended as they led 2-0 in the fifth inning.
Warsaw committed five errors in the loss to the Panthers. Junior Jordan Jones took the pitching loss for the Tigers.
Junior Jordan Steffensmeier led the Warsaw offense with two hits.
Vincent Herschberger slugged a homer and two doubles to lead the Panthers. He also drove in four runs and scored three times in the victory.
NorthWood won the junior varsity game 7-0. Jared Hawley had a double for the JV Tigers, who drop to 4-12-1 overall and 2-9 in the NLC.
Warsaw returns to conference play Friday evening with another key contest at Northridge.
Softball Squad Defeated
The Warsaw softball team started slow in losing a 9-5 final to NorthWood in league play Wednesday evening.
The host Tigers trailed 9-0 before scoring a single run in the sixth inning and four more in the seventh in the Northern Lakes Conference game played at Warsaw.
NorthWood outhit the hosts 10-8 with the Panthers making two errors and the Tigers three.
The duo of Sarah Shoemaker and Grace Johnson each had two hits to lead the offense for Warsaw. Lauren Shaffner had two RBI for the Tigers.
Freshman Courtney Chookie took the pitching loss. She allowed six earned runs in seven innings of work with five strikeouts and three walks.
Winning pitcher Taylor Troxel had three hits and three RBI for NorthWood. Claire McGuire homered for the Panthers and Summer Stillson had four hits, including two doubles, for the winners.
Warsaw drops to 5-15 overall and goes to 5-6 in the NLC. The Panthers are also 5-6 in league play.
Warsaw won the junior varsity game 15-9.
Warsaw will host Northridge in NLC action Friday night.
Golfers Win NLC Pair
The Warsaw boys golf team rolled past Concord and Goshen to start Northern Lakes Conference play in style Wednesday night.
The host Tigers shot 155 at the Stonehenge Golf Club in Winona Lake. Concord finished at 195 and Goshen came in at 201 in the league triangular.
Tim Rata and Luke Delp each shot a 38 to lead the way for coach Ben Barkey’s Tigers.
Sam Yeager finished with a 39, while Michael Jensen shot a 40 for the winners. Jacob LaLonde rounded out the varsity lineup with a 49 for Warsaw.
Brendin Green led Concord with a 43. The duo of Matt Truex and Peyton Cripe each shot a 41 to lead Goshen.
The Warsaw junior varsity team shot 188 to defeat both Concord (218) and Goshen (256).
Tommy Meier led the JV Tigers with a 40. Luke Johnson and Robbie Sullivan each shot a 49, while Chase Bryson shot 50 and Trent Rapp 54 for the Tigers.
Warsaw returns right back into NLC play on Thursday versus hosts NorthWood and Northridge at McCormick Creek Golf Course in Nappanee.
