Whitko Sports Wrap: May 9
Lady ‘Cats Dime Wabash
Hanna Yohe had a spectacular night when Mother Nature didn’t, tossing a two-hitter as Whitko beat Wabash, 10-0, Monday in a messy South Whitley.
Yohe worked all five innings and added a pair of hits at the plate herself. Kennedy Krull added a pair of doubles for the Wildcats, which scored six runs in the first and four more in the fourth inning.
Whitko moves to 12-4 on the season and 5-1 in the Three Rivers Conference. Whitko will take on Rochester Wednesday at home, needing a win to keep its hopes alive for a TRC title with Manchester still unbeaten in the conference, already handing Whitko its lone loss. Rochester also has a win against Whitko, which came in the championship of the Wawasee Invite back mid-April.
Wildcats Storm Past Apaches
Whitko handed Wabash its second loss in conference, 14-4, while leveling with the Apaches at 4-2 in the TRC standings Monday at South Whitley.
Whitko erupted for six runs in the second inning and added five more in the fourth before closing out the game with a trio in the fifth.
Whitko pounded 10 hits overall, led by power shots from Hunter Sroufe and Tanner Gaff. The two did a lot of the damage overall for Whitko, with Sroufe going 3-4 with two runs and five driven in. Sroufe had a two-run shot in the second, then doubled in two more in the fourth. Gaff had a grand slam in the second inning and scored two runs.
Gaff on the hill went all five innings, allowing just three hits and six walks but struck out six.
Whitko moves to 14-4 overall with a non-conference game Tuesday against Fort Wayne Blackhawk.
