Alzolay, Cubs Shell Snappers
SOUTH BEND – Timely hitting and strong pitching sent the South Bend Cubs to a 6-1 home win over the Beloit Snappers.
South Bend (16-11) jumped in front of Beloit thanks to a two-run third inning off Snappers starting pitcher Kyle Friedrichs. Jesse Hodges led off the frame with a single and went to third on Bryant Flete’s double. Andrew Ely scored Hodges on a sacrifice fly to center field. Flete crossed home plate on P.J Higgins RBI single.
Adbert Alzolay took advantage of the lead and attacked the strike zone during five scoreless innings allowing only two hits. Alzolay is now 3-0 and has taken over the team lead in wins.
Kyle Miller allowed one run over two and two-thirds innings in relief. James Norwood got the final five outs including four strikeouts.
South Bend picked up some insurance in the seventh scoring three times off the Beloit bullpen. Bryant Flete’s RBI single scored Matt Rose who walked with one out. PJ Higgins then finished off a three-RBI night with a two RBI double tallying Hodges (single) and Ely (walk).
Eddy Julio Martinez closed out the scoring as the Cubs outfielder hit a home run to left-center field for his team leading third long ball of the year.
