Warsaw Tennis: Tigers Get Confidence Boost
WARSAW — The Warsaw tennis team welcomed in familiar foe Culver Military Academy Thursday night. After being tripped up by NorthWood on Tuesday, the Tigers showed they were ready to get back on the court with a 5-0 sweep of the visiting Eagles.
“This match is huge for us heading into the end of the season,” Warsaw head coach Rick Orban offered. “This is either a confidence builder or confidence buster. We got off to a really good start, I liked what I saw out there, we played smart tennis. I’m pretty happy right now.”
A pair of straight set wins on the top two singles courts would put a smile on any coach’s face. Orban got exactly that as Liza Lewis won 6-0, 6-0 over Kingsley Cortes at No.1 singles while Colette Smith downed Roberta Del Rio by the same score at No. 2 singles.
Ella Knight was not far off the pace at No. 3 singles as she quickly disposed of Camila Romandia, 6-1, 6-1.
On the doubles courts there was a little more competitive spirit as Athena Schlitt and Hannah Rice defeated Rachael Dodson and Harshita Sangaraju 6-4, 6-2 on the No. 1 doubles court. It took a little bit longer for Rosie Fleming and Grace Miller to pick up the win at No. 2 doubles but the girls were able to do it with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-8) win over Katy Arkell and Gabby Maiolo.
The win certainly gives the Orange and Black a boost heading into the final two meets of the season with Concord on Friday and Goshen on Monday. The Tigers will then enter start their journey at the NLC Championships next Wednesday.
“These final two matches will really set the tone for us going into the conference tournament,” Orban said. “We’ll look to carry momentum over from tonight and see where we get seeded next week.”
Warsaw’s JV won 7-1. The JV Tigers picked up wins at one, two, three and four singles as well as one, two and three doubles.
