Party Time Again For Warsaw Girls Track
Warsaw notched its 53rd and 54th straight Northern Lakes Conference wins in the girls track circuit, lining itself up for at least a share of its 21st NLC title Tuesday night. Warsaw beat Wawasee 93-39 and host Northridge 90-42 to finish 7-0 in the round robin for the seventh straight season.
Overall depth again helped the Lady Tigers to the double, with just Audrey Rich taking a double win. Rich of course took her customary 100 (13.12) and 200 (26.31) dashes and anchored the 4×1 to glory at 50.45.
Sisters Mia and Remi Beckham each claimed a win, Mia the mile (5:14.77) and Remi the 400 (1:02.37). Allison Miller added a win in the two-mile (11:47.65) and Maygan Bellamy too the 300 hurdles at 47.80.
The 4×800 relay started the day with a 9:39.13 and the 4×400 closed the day with a 4:07.66.
Alexie Day again won the high jump at 5-2 and Joelle Messenger claimed another pole vault win at 8-6.
Wawasee had Casey Schroeder claim a win in long jump at 16-4.5, a half-inch longer than teammate Hannah-Marie Lamle. Alexis Mangas won the discus with a 102-8 send and Katlyn Kennedy went 36-8 in the shot put.
Wawasee will run in Saturday’s Goshen Relays before joining Warsaw, Northridge and the rest of the NLC at the NLC Championships next Tuesday at Warsaw.
Warsaw Blasts Past Memorial
Timely hits from the Warsaw softball team helped the club to an 8-4 win over Elkhart Memorial Tuesday evening in Tiger Town.
In the make-up game from Monday’s spongy field, Taylor Sleeth had a key two-run single in the third and Grace Johnson provided a big pair of insurance runs on a homer in the sixth.
Lauren Shaffner brought home two runs and Abby Glass also drove in two for the Tigers. Warsaw picked up its fourth win of the season, and all four are in the Northern Lakes Conference. Warsaw is 4-12 overall and 4-3 in the NLC.
Courtney Chookie struck out seven and walked just one to get the win. The Chargers got six hits, and cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth. Johnson’s homer in the sixth put the game away.
Warsaw will host Wawasee Wednesday in a 6 p.m. varsity start.
Tigers Third At Joe Harris
Warsaw’s varsity five pasted together a 317 to finish third at the Joe Harris Shootout Tuesday at Rozella Ford Golf Course. The 18-hole hustler had Fort Wayne Canterbury post a 301 to easily capture the title, with runner-up NorthWood 15 back at 316.
Triton shot a 320 to tie Rochester for fifth, Wawasee was at 341 and Warsaw’s JV shot 345 in the nine-team field.
Warsaw was led by the season-best round of 75 from Tim Rata and Sam Yeager posting a 79. Luke Delp came in at 80, Michael Jensen posting an 83 and Tommy Meier carding an 85.
Jake LaLonde led the Warsaw second team with an 81.
Triton had Braden Kreft led the squad with a 77 and Jordan Anderson starting the chain at 80, followed by Beau Hepler at 81, Isaac Wall at 82 and Bryce Swihart at 85.
Wawasee was paced by Jeffrey Moore’s 78 and Cal Heinisch’s 82. Cam Adams had an 89, Trevor Haessig a 92 and Kyle Weideman a 96.
Warsaw will play next Tuesday at Stonehenge against Goshen and Concord in the Northern Lakes Conference opener, Wawasee will play Wednesday at Round Barn against Tippecanoe Valley, and Triton will play Thursday at Sprig-O-Mint against Bremen and Oregon-Davis.
Panthers Rally To Surprise Tiger Tennis
After taking a 2-1 lead in the singles courts, Warsaw let two leads slip away in the doubles courts as NorthWood stormed back to claim a 3-2 win in Northern Lakes Conference tennis Tuesday at Warsaw.
Colette Smith and Ella Knight each won in singles play by matching 6-0, 6-2 scores over Hanna Walter and Reegan Miller while NorthWood’s Sydney Wysong topped Liza Lewis 6-2, 6-0 as all eyes shifted to doubles play.
At No. 2 doubles, Grace Miller and Rosie Fleming took the first set 6-2, but NorthWood rallied to claim the second set 6-1. In the third set, the Panthers stood tall in a 6-3 final.
At No. 1 doubles, Warsaw’s Hannah Rice and Athena Schlitt took a 6-2 in set one over Jama Rice and Kennedy Wiens. NorthWood came back to take the second game 6-2, then battled to a 7-5 thriller, giving the Panthers a big conference victory.
In JV matches, Warsaw defeated NorthWood 5-3. Results were as follows:
