Triton Sports Wrap: May 3
Triton Takes The Cake, Wants The Icing
It needed to be done, and was, for the Triton girls tennis team Tuesday. Having already crushed Knox earlier in the season, Triton did so once again on its home court, 5-0, to finish 6-0 in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference and round robin champions.
The Trojans, now 10-0 on the season, will be overwhelming favorites in the HNAC tournament next Wednesday and Thursday at Knox. It was business as usual, though, Tuesday, as Triton had four of its courts done and recorded in under an hour.
Kolbie Mason at No. 2 overwhelmed Sommer Shephard love and love while Hannah Wanemacher and Emma Ross at one doubles and Tatum Thompson and Megan McFarland at two doubles both came off with 6-0, 6-1 finals against the pairings of Cameron McGowan and Maria Hasneri and Madison Land and Kayla Loughry.
Quinn Downing was consistent in a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Shelby Faverty at No. 3 and Shelby May took some time, but strung together a 6-4, 6-1 final against Hannah Lueth at No. 1.
Triton ran through the conference slate without losing a court.
Up next for the Trojans is a trip to Bremen on Thursday to face potential sectional foe Bremen.
Slugfest Goes Way Of The Trojan
Triton and North Judson combined to record 29 hits Tuesday, but Triton’s eight runs in the first two innings were the difference in a 10-3 final in HNAC baseball at Ken Keller Field.
Every Trojan got at least one hit against the Blue Jays, led by three Triton batters with a trio of knocks. Zac Pitney led the charge with three hits, including a homer and three runs driven in. Billy Smith and Nate Flenar also had three hits, Flenar collecting a pair of two-baggers and two runs scored and driven in.
Keygan Mosier added two RBIs and Max Slusser was 2-for-4 with a run scored.
Pitney earned the ‘W’ on the hill, throwing all seven innings. The junior did give up 13 hits and three walks, but fanned nine and limited the Blue Jays to just a three hung in the fifth.
Triton’s win moves the club to 8-6 overall and 7-3 in the HNAC. The Trojans will jump into another home-and-home in the conference with a trip to Winamac Thursday then a homer with Winamac Friday.
