Grace Baseball: Lancers End Season With Walk-off Win
WINONA LAKE – The Grace College baseball team reached the 20-win plateau for just the third time in program history on Tuesday.
The Lancers split with St. Francis at Miller Field by the scores of 4-5 and 3-2 to wrap up the 2016 season.
The 2016 campaign under head coach Bill Barr marks the first season since 2010 with at least 20 victories and the third 20-win season in team history.
The second game of the day — and final of Grace’s season — provided a walkoff memory on Senior Day.
With the game knotted at 2-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Chase Baker led off with a walk. Logan Grigsby came in to pinch run and reached third base on a wild throw by USF’s catcher. With two outs in the inning, senior CJ Swartz singled through the left side of the infield to plate Grigsby and send the Lancers’ dugout charging onto the field in celebration of the 3-2 victory.
Blake Converset pitched a four-hit gem from the mound in the contest, allowing one earned run and striking out five. He needed just 93 pitches to complete his seven innings and get the win.
Offensively, Grace scored its three runs with only two hits. The Lancers manufactured their runs with smart baserunning, drawing four walks and being hit by a pitch three times.
Baker had Grace’s first hit, and Swartz had the final hit with the last swing of Grace’s season.
In the opening game, Grace’s offense was muted with just one hit as a team. The Lancers were patient at the plate, however, and were rewarded with three walks and four hit batsmen. The Cougars also committed five errors in the field, giving Grace ample baserunning opportunity.
The Cougars jumped ahead 3-0 in the third inning, sparked by a two-run home run.
Grace scored its first two runs in the bottom of the fifth, but USF added a run of its own in the top of the inning. Shay Hepler recorded a single, and he came around to score along with Matthew Warren off the bat of Jakob Radjenovich.
The Lancers had bases loaded in both the fifth and sixth innings, but Grace could not produce enough runs to come back.
In the sixth inning, Grace loaded the bases with a walk and two hit batsmen. CJ Swartz brought in one run with a sacrifice fly, and Hunter Ackerman walked to bring in a free run.
Logan Grigsby started and tossed six innings with five runs allowed. Aaron Voirol worked a clean seventh inning in relief.
Senior Day honored the graduating class of Frank Rocchio (lost to injury after leading league in batting average as a junior), Wesley Gensch, Swartz and Austin Green.
