Wawasee Girls Track: RedHawks Sweep Warriors, Pilgrims
SYRACUSE — The final scores didn’t go their way and the cold weather was far from welcomed but neither of those negatives could keep many members of the members of the Wawasee girls track team from staying positive Tuesday night. A flurry of solid individual performances kept things enjoyable for the Warriors as they walked off the track following defeats to both Plymouth (68.50-63.50) and Goshen (88-44).
“We got some girls to step up tonight, it was nice to see,” began Wawasee head coach Scott Lancaster. “Some of our younger girls, like KC Mendoza, really had nice nights. Casey Schroeder went over 15 feet in the long jump, Alexis Brinson went over eight feet in the pole vault. Our throwers, I thought, performed well. There were a lot of positives that we can take away from this meet.”
Schroeder’s efforts led her to a first place finish in the long jump. The freshman jumped 15-5 to beat out Plymouth’s Madison Smith (14-9) and Rachel Crawford (14-1). Katlyn Kennedy also had a first place effort in the field for Wawasee. Kennedy threw 38-6.5 in the shot to edge Plymouth’s Nicole Horvath (37-10.5). Brinson took third in pole vault with a clearance of 8-00. Alexis Manges took second in discus with a 108-5.5 to round out the notable field performances for Wawasee. Horvath took first in disc with a 112-11.
The positive performances in the field served as a precursor for a nice night on the track for Wawasee.
“I didn’t get to see a lot of everything tonight,” Lancaster continued, “I was mainly up in the box running the timing system but what I was able to see was pleasing.
“Our 4×8 went out and competed well, the 4×1 was in the mix and just came up short and not for a lack of effort. That’s pleasing. They work hard. Our girls competed hard and didn’t give things away. Elizabeth Zorn had another really nice night. Aubrey Kuhn had good races in the mile and the half. She’s not used to putting the mile in with her other events. Her and Elizabeth had four-event nights and both performed very well.”
Zorn was tops in two of her individual events, the only Warrior runner to enjoy a first place finish on the night. The senior ran a 5:43.95 in the 1600 to take first while Kuhn was fourth in the event (5:57.72). Zorn later won the 3200 with a 12:31.50, finishing well ahead of Goshen’s Jacqueline Fernandez (13:07.73). Zorn also took second in the 800 (2:36.22), finishing behind Goshen’s Nora Rangel (2:32.27).
Hannah-Marie Lamle was the only other Warrior to finish as high as second in an individual track event. The sophomore rebounded from a fourth place effort in the 100 hurdles (17.40) to take second in the 300 hurdles (50.84).
Adriene Gill (14.08) took third in the 100 meter dash for Wawasee. Skylar Janda was the next highest finisher in the event for Wawasee, placing fifth with a time of 14.28. Plymouth’s Ally Dolan won the sprinter’s event with a time of 13.55.
In the relays Wawasee took second in the 4×800 with the team of Kuhn, Zorn, Kenzie Smith and Sarah Lancaster (10:30.78). Wawasee was third in both the 4×100 (54.38) and 4×400 (4:39.07). Goshen swept in Tuesday’s relays.
Mendoza highlighted the JV events for Wawasee as she won the 100 dash (14.18) 200 dash (31.74). Caitlin Wortinger (14.37) was second in the 100 for the Warriors. Molly Swartz won the JV 1600 (6:16.39). Wawasee’s relay teams took second and third in the 4×400 with times of 4:54.83 and 5:26.58, respectively.
Goshen completed its sweep of the meet with a 75-57 win over Plymouth.
Wawasee (1-3, 1-2) now turns its focus to the John Reed Relays at East Noble this Saturday.
