Combs Given Probation On Neglect Charges
WARSAW — Janet A. Combs, 42, Warsaw, who has been sober for 13 months, has participated in rehabilitation programs and is helping others, was given three years in the county jail, but all suspended to be served on probation. She was also ordered to serve 80 hours of community service.
Combs appeared in Kosciusko Circuit Court Monday, April 24, on charges of dealing in methamphetamine, neglect of a dependent, possession of a chemical reagent or precursors with intent to manufacture a controlled substance. Through a plea agreement Combs pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent, possession of methamphetamine and possession of precursors, all level 6 felonies. A charge of dealing in methamphetamine was dismissed.
Scott Lennox, counsel for Combs, noted these were serious offenses however his client had taken inpatient courses at Rose Home and outpatient counseling at Bowen Center, she has a full time employment, and has been sober for 13 months. “It’s no drop in the bucket for how long she has been an addict.”
Combs addressed the court, thanking the judicial system for making her a better person. “I had a disease … address that and able to help others address that issue. I’m very thankful today.”
Reed stated he has known Combs for a while and was pleased with the positive action she has taken. “The steps you’ve taken are impressive, I’ll always be worried about you relapsing … get others out of their circumstances.”
Comb’s sentences for neglect of a dependent and possession of methamphetamine would run consecutive, but concurrent to possession of a precursor. She also received a six month driver’s license suspension.
“Continue doing what you have to do and what you have been doing,” stated Reed.
