Cubs Grab Another Win
SOUTH BEND – The South Bend Cubs (7-6) took the rubber match Wednesday against the visiting Bowling Green Hot Rods (6-8) with an 8-4 victory.
Bowling Green jumped out early with a 2-0 lead, only for South Bend to counter with four runs in the bottom half of the inning. The Hot Rods added another run in the third, but the Cubs came back again with four runs to take an 8-3 lead.
South Bend had 13 hits on the night, led by the three knocks from Tyler Alamo, who added an RBI. Eddy Martinez and Daniel Spingola each had two hits and two RBIs, and the Cubs had eight players overall collect at least one hit.
Jake Cronenworth, Michael Russell and Joe McCarthy all had two hits apiece and combined to score all four Hot Rods runs. Daniel Rodriguez had three hits and an RBI for the visitors.
Cubs starter Justin Steele got the win, going five innings and allowing four hits, two earned runs and striking out six for his first win as a Cub.
“We try to emphasize with our guys,” Jimmy Gonzalez said after the win, “the situational stuff is key. It’s important when you have runners on third base with less than two outs, to be able to get that guy in rather it be a sac fly or a ground ball if the infield’s back. And they need to capitalize on those situations.”
The Cubs will be back in action tomorrow against the second place Fort Wayne TinCaps. First pitch is at 7:05p.m.
