Dotson Helping Hoosiers On Diamond
BLOOMINGTON – Kelsey Dotson, a former softball star at WCHS, is in her final Spring as a member of the Indiana University squad.
Dotson, a catcher for the Hoosiers, has started 21 games for coach Michelle Gardner’s team. She is hitting .298 with two homers, four doubles and 14 RBI. Dotson has scored 11 runs and drawn 14 walks and has a slugging percentage of .511 and an on base percentage of .514.
Dotson has been sidelined for the last three weeks after suffering a broken right hand. Dotson smashed a grand slam home run in her final game on March 12 as the Hoosiers blanked Evansville 8-0 in the Indiana Classic. Freshman pitcher Tara Trainer fired her first career no-hitter in the win, striking out 13 in the five-inning contest.
Dotson hit 14 home runs during her junior season in 2015 and led the Hoosiers with 46 RBI. She batted a career-high .349 a year ago while starting 53 games.
Dotson was a four-year standout at Warsaw as she earned All-State honors as both a junior and senior. She hit a school record 12 home runs her senior season in 2012 with a .554 batting average and 37 RBI. Dotson hit .541 during her high school career.
Freshman pitcher Josie Wood, who starred at North Miami High School, is 10-6 in the circle for the Hoosiers. Wood has seven complete games and three shutouts to go with a 2.87 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 112.1 innings of work. Wood led North Miami to a Class 1-A state championship in 2014 and a semistate berth in 2015.
The Hoosiers are 21-14 overall and 4-4 in Big Ten play this Spring. Indiana split a league twinbill Tuesday at Purdue, winning the opener 1-0 and losing game two by a 6-4 final.
