INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana State Museum will bestow its most prestigious Heritage Keeper Award to Indiana’s four living governors at the annual Tribute event Thursday, April 28, at the Indiana State Museum. The event is presented by one of Indiana’s greatest stories: the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500, in partnership with Hulman and Company.
“This year we are excited to celebrate the four living governors of the State of Indiana. These individuals represent the best and brightest ambassadors and public servants when it comes to matters of community,” said Indiana State Museum President and CEO Tom King.
The award is given to Indiana’s greatest ambassadors for their embodiment of the Hoosier spirit in their accomplishments, leadership and service to the state. This group of Indiana governors will be the sixth honoree, following former First Lady Judy O’Bannon in 2015, Rabbi Sandy Sasso in 2014, Senator Richard Lugar in 2013, Earle Goode in 2012 and the Hulman-George Family in 2011. The group includes:
- Evan Bayh from1989 to 1997
- Joseph E. Kernan from 2003 to 2005
- Mitch E. Daniels, Jr. from 2005 to 2013
- Michael R. Pence from 2013 to present
The life and contributions of late Edgar D. Whitcomb, who served from 1969 to 1973, to Indiana will be celebrated as well at the event.
This year’s Tribute event will begin with an exclusive VIP reception with the governors for presenting sponsors, followed by a panel discussion, awards presentation and dinner reception.
This year’s honorary chairs include former Lieutenant Governors Sue Ellspermann, Becky Skillman, Kathy Davis and John Mutz.
“The Tribute is our signature fundraising event. Proceeds from the event allow us to develop high quality exhibitions and dynamic programming for visitors and students around the state, while recognizing Indiana’s most illustrious citizens and leaders,” King added.
