Adorable Otter Rescued In Florida Finds New Home In Denver
DENVER — A rescued otter has a new home in what might go down as the cutest FedEx delivery ever.
First, meet “Oliver.”
Oliver was found at a gas station near Tampa earlier this month and was taken to the Owl’s Nest Sanctuary for Wildlife. Since the otter had become so accustomed to humans before his rescue, releasing him back into the wild after his care at Owl’s Nest would be dangerous.
After doing research, Owl’s Nest found Oliver a new home at the Downtown Aquarium in Denver, where he’ll spend his days with two other otters — Emmett and Slater.
“After offering (Oliver) to two of our local establishments, I researched Denver and found it to be the closest thing to perfection both in reputation, sound backing and animal ambassador programs to give him the best life in captivity possible,” Owl’s Nest’s Kris Porter told Eyewitness News via email.
To get Oliver to Denver, FedEx stepped up as part of the company’s “Delivering For Good” initiative. The otter was treated to an experience that goes above and beyond “first class,” getting his own pool during a layover at the FedEx World Hub in Memphis, as well as a shrimp and salmon dinner donated by a local restaurant.
Once a blizzard cleared and allowed the Denver International Airport to reopen, Oliver was on his way to his new home, where he landed safely to start his new life.
A spokesman for the Downtown Aquarium says Oliver is doing well and is getting used to his new surroundings “behind the scenes,” and will soon join the other two otters in the aquarium’s main space.
Porter says Owl’s Nest has rescued five otter pups so far this year. Two female otters rescued by the group will be able to be released back into the wild.
