WACC Video Production Students Succeed At NOCTI Contest
WARSAW — Angela Hopper’s WACC TV students recently received second and third place in NOCTI’s annual video contest. The same school has only placed twice in the same year one other time in NOCTI history. Students were awarded a class pizza party and $400 ($250 for second place and $150 for third place).
The theme for NOCTI’s 2016 video contest is, “Be Your Own Hero.” The contest encouraged students to start thinking of heroes beyond the traditional cape and mask trope. Instead, students were asked to examine how those in areas such as law enforcement, nursing, welding or information technology save the day. Students were able to show off their video skills individually or with a group of “sidekicks.”
Students worked in pairs as they brainstormed, scripted, filmed and edited their own submissions for the contest using their choice of software, such as Adobe Premiere CC, Final Cut Pro X and Photoshop.
They were also responsible for scouting locations and talent as well as obtaining releases for all participants. Students utilized skills that they previously learned in class as well as new skills they mastered in a short period of time to complete the desired effects for this contest.
This project was given to students to help fulfill their required public service announcement/commercial requirement for their dual credit course through Huntington University. Students completing the course can earn up to four college credits and have had work featured on local newscasts. One of the goals of this course is to provide practical, hands-on assignments that can assist others.
This is the sixth year for the annual nationwide contest. It is the first year a school from Indiana has placed in the contest.
“Students are grateful for Red Apple Grants from the Kosciusko County Education Foundation that continue to provide them with professional equipment and unique experiences that most high school students are unable to have until they reach college,” Hopper said.
