Championship Saturday For NCCAA
WINONA LAKE – The women’s basketball team from Roberts Wesleyan and men’s basketball team from Emmanuel College claimed NCCAA titles Saturday after championship games played at the Manahan Orthopaedic Capital Center on the campus of Grace College.
In the women’s championship, No. 2 Roberts Wesleyan defeated No. 1 Colorado Christian 70-58. Roberts wins its first-ever NCCAA title, finishing at 29-7 overall this season. Brooke Fields led the way for the Redhawks with 20 points, while Samantha Courtney had 11 points and Necedah James had 10 points. Lucy Covely and Taylor Bynoe combined for 14 points and 18 rebounds for the champions.
Claire Paxton paced Colorado with 17 points and six rebounds while Kaitlyn Hinch, who was the hero in the first two games for the Cougars, ended with 10 points. Ali Meyer and Kate Louthan both had double-doubles for the Cougars with 10 points and 10 rebounds for Meyer and 12 points and 12 boards for Louthan. Sharpshooter Taylor Torres was held to just 1-10 shooting and 1-8 from downtown, ending with just three points but had nine assists. Colorado Christian (23-10) was seeking its second NCCAA title, last winning a title on Grace’s floor in 2012.
In the men’s final, No. 1 Emmanuel (27-5) showed it was the elite team of the men’s tournament by sweeping through with a 75-68 win against No. 2 Southwestern Christian University. Kurtis Robinson led the way for the Lions with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Zach Lillie had 15 points and six boards and Kendrick Colvin finished with 15 points. It was Emmanuel’s second NCCAA title, also champion in 2009.
Southwestern (19-15) played well as the No. 2 seed, with Marvin White having a huge championship game with 29 points to lead all scorers. Gabi Laurent and Mikel Parish each finished 12 points for the Eagles.
In the third-place games, the Oklahoma Baptist women beat Northwestern 82-77 while the Grace College men defeated Trinity International 91-87. Tasha Edge led Baptist (17-16) with 24 points while Jessica Cole had 22 points in the loss for Northwestern (23-8). Logan Irwin paced Grace (21-14) with 24 points in his final game for the Lancers while Trinity (20-14) had Grant Corsi lead the way with 21 points.
