NCCAA Day One Wrap-up
WINONA LAKE – Day one is in the books at the NCCAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball National Championships. Here’s a breakdown of the men’s and women’s brackets as action will shift to winner’s and loser’s bracket play Thursday.
Men’s Games:
No. 6 Trinity International 89, No. 3 Ohio Christian 76
Jeremy Carlyle paced Trinity (20-12) to the upset by scoring 22 points. Zach Kirschbaum added 15 points for the Trojans. Ohio Christian (22-10) had Conor Maybry net 18 points and Gary Hoover toss in eight points and 13 boards.
No. 2 Southwestern Christian 74, No. 7 Bluefield 66
James Still had a huge game for the Eagles (18-14) with 27 points and eight rebounds, helping the two-seed move on. Bluefield (21-13) had Cordaris Townes record 17 points and 10 board and teammate Zeke Williams score 16 points.
No. 4 Grace 85, No. 5 Alice Lloyd 66
The Lancers (20-13) defended its home court, using a game-high 25 points from Brandon Vanderhegghen and 14 points from Erik Bowen. Mason Pack led Alice Lloyd (18-14) with 19 points.
No. 1 Emmanuel 76, No. 8 Central Christian 47
Once Emmanuel got going, there was no stopping the top seed in the tournament. All 16 of the Lions dressed got into the game, and 12 scored. An incredibly balanced effort had just two players hit double digits, and only 10 points apiece from Zach Lillie and Kurtis Robinson. Nathan Williams added nine points for the Lions (25-5), which will meet Grace in the tournament semi-finals. Central Christian (19-14) had Michael Gholston lead the club with 13 points.
Women’s Games:
No. 6 Northwestern 61, No. 3 Emmanuel 57
Northwestern (23-6) claimed the upset in the day’s first game with Amy Berglund netting 17 points and Regan Cooper pulling in 15 points and 11 rebounds. Mikayla Trombley had 15 points and Elise Coberly had 11 points and 10 boards for Emmanuel, which falls to 19-12 overall.
No. 2 Roberts Wesleyan 77, No. 7 Bethesda 68
Roberts (27-7) pulled away late and had Samantha Courtney lead the team with 23 points and nine rebounds. Ajia McIntyre added 19 points in the win. Jonalynn Fuentes had 22 points for Bethesda (14-13) and Aunjanay Chambers chipped in eight points and 15 caroms.
No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist 58, No. 5 Point 50
Baptist (16-15) really had to work to knock off Point, using 19 points from Dereese Owens and 10 points and nine boards from Vanessa Calhoun. Kiara Moore led Point (23-10) with 21 points and Tasha Edge finished with eight points and 12 boards.
No. 1 Colorado Christian 75, No. 8 Bluefield 70
The top seed dodged a bullet, rallying in the final seconds to force overtime, then taking control in the extra frame. Kate Louthan led all scorers with 30 points and added eight rebounds in the win, Kaitlyn Hinch adding 14 points for Colorado (22-9). Bluefield (20-12), which had a chance to salt the game away late, had Shelby Key score 19 points and Monique Robson had 13 points and seven rebounds.
