Three Injured In Accident Involving Police Vehicle
WARSAW — Three people suffered minor injuries in a two-vehicle accident Sunday afternoon, March 13, at North Detroit Street and Lake City Highway.
Warsaw Police Officer Phillip M. Hawks, 28, East Fort Wayne Street, Warsaw, complained of pain to the head. He was checked by Lutheran EMS paramedics and taken to MedStat per policy of the Warsaw Police Department.
Jeanine T. Divaccaro, 52, South SR 25, Warsaw, and Francesca T. Divaccaro, 20, South SR 15, Warsaw, were taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital. Jeanine Divaccaro, driver, complained of pain to her left hand and some neck pain. Francesca Divaccaro, a passenger, complained of pain to the knee.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department reports Hawks was eastbound on the exit ramp from US 30, going to turn northbound onto North Detroit Street in a 2015 Chevrolet police vehicle, registered to the city of Warsaw. He was responding to a domestic complaint with emergency lights and sires. Hawks told the sheriff’s deputy he slowed the vehicle while on the exit ramp, passing a line of cars and as he approached Detroit Street, he slowed the vehicle even more.
Hawks stated when he reached the intersection he saw the Divaccaro southbound 2012 Chrysler and thought the driver saw him and began to proceed through the intersection. When he noticed the Divaccaro did not see his vehicle and was not stopping it was too late. The police vehicle was struck on the driver’s side.
Divaccaro stated she has observed a police car northbound on Detroit Street, prior to entering the intersection and did hear a siren, but thought it was coming from the police car that had just passed her. When she saw Hawks’ vehicle enter into the intersection, she attempted to stop, but could not.
Witnesses confirmed that emergency lights and sirens were activated on the police vehicle prior to the accident.
Damage was estimated up to $50,000.
