Kentucky Shelter Raising Money For Dog Who Lost Two Legs
MENIFEE COUNTY, KENT. — A community is rallying around a dog after an accident left her with two of her legs amputated.
A shelter is doing everything they can to give Shay a second chance.
Shay is a two-year-old chocolate lab mix who was badly injured last month. Officials at the shelter believe she was most likely hit by a car.
“She had a compound fracture is one of her front legs. So we got her to the vet,” said Diana McGuire with the Menifee County Animal Shelter. “They could not save that leg and it had to be amputated.”
A few days after one leg was amputated, volunteers at the shelter noticed her other leg was beginning to swell.
That leg was also broken and infection had started to set it. They tried to save the leg by putting it in a cast, but it came down to the decision to euthanize Shay or remove the leg.
With both front legs gone, the team at Menifee County Animal Shelter is working to get a special doggie wheelchair for Shay.
“It is custom made for the dog. It will have wheels in the back,” said McGuire.
There would be some limitations with the wheelchair, but it would allow Shay to interact with people and other animals on a fairly normal basis.
Volunteers say it could allow her to go on walks with an owner, once she has one.
The shelter is trying to find Shay a forever home and a family that could take care of her special needs.
The Menifee County Animal Shelter is still working to cover the vet fees for both of her surgeries and they are still raising money to purchase the wheelchair for her. You can donate here.
