Six-Foot Python Swallows Teddy Bear
GOLD COAST, AUSTRALIA, — A 6-foot python in Australia let its appetite get the better of it. The carpet python swallowed a little purple stuffed bear.
In this part of the world, winter is coming and snakes are feasting.
“They’re really obsessing for food, and if a dog had been playing with this and it smells right, it will do,” said snake catcher Tony Harrison.
Harrison noticed the unusual bulge in the snake, and an X-ray confirmed the little bear was in there.
So the snake went under the knife.
Harrison said the snakes have been known to eat things like plastic bags, if they have a good smell.
But while snakes may snack on unusual items, they rarely get medical attention. Most die. The retrieval of this teddy bear marks the first time Dr. Matt Hollindale had operated on a snake in his 16-year career.
Since the operation, the stuffed bear has been through the wash several times, and he’s already on the way back home to his owner.
The snake, now sporting 15 stitches, will be on antibiotics for two weeks before being released.
“We try to go in there and make as little of damage as possible, basically,” Hollindale said . “So she is basically a normal snake again now.”
And with any hope, her next meal will be something a little bit more digestible.
