Man Arrested On Drug Charges, Obstruction Of Justice
CLAYPOOL — A Claypool man has been arrested after attempting to hide drugs and paraphernalia from police.
Trevis Aaron Smith, 25, 6697 S. CR 700W, Claypool, was booked Wednesday, March 3, in the Kosciusko County Jail on preliminary charges of possession of a narcotic, possession of a syringe, obstruction of justice and possession of marijuana.
Court documents state on Nov. 3, 2015, Mentone EMS responded to calls about an unresponsive male. They arrived to find Thomas Smith, Claypool, unconscious on the bedroom floor from what appeared to be a heroin overdose.
Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department Officer Neil Likens arrived to find EMTs performing CPR on Smith. A plastic bag containing a syringe was lying next to Smith. A female in the residence stated she found the syringe and placed it in the bag.
Meanwhile, Sheriff’s Officer Kevin Gelbaugh heard a noise behind the residence and went to investigate. He noticed a vehicle belonging to Smith’s brother, Trevis Smith, parked behind the barn and looked inside. He noticed a syringe and a plastic bag. Trevis Smith admitted to finding and placing the bag and syringe in a car to hide them. He also admitted that he and his brother used heroin.
Officers obtained a warrant and searched the vehicle, where they found several hypodermic needles, a box containing two more needles, two spoons with residue and pieces of plastic straw with a white powdery residue. Officers also recovered Trevis Smith’s jacket from the vehicle. Inside the pocket was a wallet containing cellophane with a brown, powdery substance that later tested positive for heroin; a bag containing spice; and a plastic bag containing a plant material officers identified as marijuana.
Officers arrested Smith and booked him in the Kosciusko County on a $5,000 surety and $250 cash bond.
