UPDATE: Jackknifed Semi Closes US 30
WARSAW — Instead of running a red light, a semitractor driver jackknifed his vehicle, when he couldn’t get stopped. The action caused a diesel fuel spill.
The accident occurred at 9:42 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 25, on Lake City Highway, west of Anchorage Road, Warsaw.
David Lopez, 48, West 24th, Chicago, Ill., was driving a 2007 Volvo semitractor, registered to Five Star Enterprise of Illinois Inc., Schaumberg, Ill., eastbound on US 30. He told police he was just passing the overpass at North Detroit Street and saw the traffic light at Lake City and Anchorage Road change to yellow, then red. He attempted to stop, but could not due to a shift in the cargo he was hauling.
Lopez said he then jackknifed the truck to avoid going through the intersection. The jackknifing ruptured a fuel tank, causing a fuel spill.
No one was injured.
Damage was estimated up to $5,000.
