All-Hazard Radios Available In Kosciusko County
KOSCIUSKO COUNTY — As spring approaches, so does the chance for severe weather. The Indiana Department of Homeland Security and Kosciusko County Emergency Management want to make sure everyone has a chance to be safe.
While weather alert radios are available for purchase, not everyone has the means to buy one. Because of this, Kosciusko County EMA has a limited number available for local residents who may be in need.
“We will have a sufficient number of weather alert radios,” EMA Director Ed Rock said. “These are to go to the underprivileged, those people who could not afford a weather alert radio.”
The weather radios do not come with batteries, however, so Rock notes that anyone who wishes to pick one up will need to bring three AA batteries and he will program their radio for them.
Local ham radio operators are also planning two events, in conjunction with an area meteorologist, for some time in May. Dates, times and locations will be announced closer to the events.
All brands of weather radio will be welcome.
“The the nice thing about the amateur radio operators. They can usually figure out the most obscure type of weather radio and get it programmed,” Rock said.
There are about 80 all-hazard weather radios currently available, though the Department of Homeland Security intends to send more out to Indiana counties soon. Kosciusko County residents wishing to obtain a weather radio can call (574) 267-7888 and leave their name, phone number and a message that they are calling about the weather alert radios.
