Maxine Frances Scheiber
Maxine Frances Scheiber, 83, Columbia City, and formerly of Larwill, passed away at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, 2016, at her home. Born Oct. 25, 1932, in Fort Wayne, she was the daughter of Phillip J. and Genevieve M. (Schiffli) Herber.
She graduated from St. Francis High School in Mishawaka with the Class of 1950. Maxine was a former novitiate of the Sisters of St. Francis of Perpetual Adoration in Mishawaka. Maxine Herber later married Donald J. Scheiber on Jan. 2, 1954, at St. Joseph’s Hessen Cassel Catholic Church in Fort Wayne. Following their marriage, they moved to Notre Dame, then on to Bethesda, Md. in 1957, and back to Fort Wayne in 1962. In 1976, they moved to Whitley County. Maxine had worked at First Class Child Care in Columbia City, the Larwill Post Office, and had volunteered at Miller’s Merry Manor. She was active in many parish ministries and had been member of St. Francis Xavier Church in Pierceton before becoming a parishioner of St. Paul of the Cross in Columbia City in 2014.
Survivors include her husband of 62 years: Dr. Don Scheiber; children: Michael J. (Cathy) Scheiber, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; David J. (Sharon) Scheiber, Churubusco; Susan M. Woodward, Columbia City; Victoria M. Anweiler, Huntington; Doῆa M. (Nicholas) Reust, Columbia City; Joseph J. (Cindy) Scheiber, Kimmel; Elizabeth M. (Dr. Mark) Rudin, Boise, Idaho; James J. (Jeni) Scheiber, Roanoke; sisters: Mary M. Armstrong, Colo.; Helene Jacquay, Auburn; Joann Nesler, Tucson, Ariz.; Rosemary Stout, Fla.; Jane Eisberg, Green Valley, Ariz.; Barbara Smith, Fort Wayne; brothers: Jerome A. Herber, Fort Wayne; Dr. Lawrence J. Herber, Alta Loma, Calif.; Fr. John Herber, CPPS, Mo.; James Herber, Fort Wayne; 24 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters: Anne Marie Cappelli; Carolyn Boyle; and Phyllis A. Forbing; and brother: Joseph Herber.
Visitation will be from 2-3:45 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 25, with a 4 p.m. Rosary Service at DeMoney-Grimes Funeral Home, Columbia City. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 26, at St. Paul of the Cross Catholic Church, Columbia City with visitation one hour prior. Father Gary Sigler will be officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Cemetery, Larwill.
Memorial gifts may be given in her memory to Foreign Missions Society of Precious Blood.
