Other School Board Agenda Items
SYRACUSE — Other agenda items considered by the Wawasee school board at its Tuesday, Feb. 9, meeting in Syracuse included:
• Several Wawasee High School art students won awards at a regional competition and qualified for a national competition in New York.
• WHS Vocal Motion choir finished third runner-up at the Bellmont High School Winter Spectacular in January.
• WHS culinary arts students Natalie Hitchcock and Alexys Bronsing qualified for the state competition April 15 in Indianapolis.
• A reception will be held following the Wawasee-Goshen boys basketball game Friday evening, Feb. 12, honoring retiring WHS girls basketball coach Kem Zolman.
• WHS Athletic Department Secretary Leslie Jackson was commended for her efforts in helping someone in a wheelchair to find a good seat at the Wawasee-Concord boys basketball game in late January. A letter was submitted to the IHSAA thanking Jackson for her help.
• The school board approved assigning easement rights to the Turkey Creek Regional Sewer District for some property owned by Mary Lou Dixon. Dixon, a school board member, abstained from voting.
• Approval was given for the Wawasee school corporation to negotiate with The Crossing about the possibility of a campus for The Crossing being brought to Wawasee beginning with the 2017-18 school year. The Crossing is an alternative school.
• James Flecker, school corporation attorney, noted the school corporation is paying for a portion of the cost of the town of Syracuse to install a water main in front of soccer fields near the site of the new Syracuse Elementary School on Kern Road. There is presently not a sufficient water supply for the new school, he said. Wawasee is also applying for a $10,000 grant to help pay for a trail to lead to the new school.
• The board approved advertising a logo or slogan for the school corporation, the design of which is not completely finished, to help market the corporation.
• Jim Evans, director of finance for the school corporation, said the Wawasee district is eligible for a state school performance grant, but the exact amount to be received is not known yet.
• And the board learned Remedy Live, a Fort Wayne based teen crisis hotline, is looking for sponsors to make the line available for Wawasee students.
