Sue Ellen (Houck) Johnston
Sue Ellen (Houck) Johnston peacefully went home to be with her Heavenly Father while holding the hand of her husband of 57 years, Gaylord Dean Johnston, at Englewood, Fla., Community Hospital on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2016, at the age of 75.
Sue was born on Feb. 20, 1940, in Warsaw, the daughter of George Robert Houck and Esther Fern (Rush) Houck, who preceded her in death. She met her future husband, Gaylord, while on a hay ride for a church function in 1958, and they were married on June 19, 1959.
She was a lifetime resident of Warsaw, and a member of the Warsaw Church of God. She was a graduate of Mentone High School in 1958. She enjoyed volunteering with Bible school, transporting kids to church, potluck dinners, and sponsoring a young girl through high school, college graduation, and eventually got her doctorate. Sue’s biggest joy was spending vacations with her grandchild and travelling to see her great-grandchildren.
She and her husband spent the last 13 winters in Florida. Sue loved to watch the wildlife from her porch window. Many days the two of them would jump in the car to catch a sunset as a perfect ending to the day. One of their favorite lunches was a hotdog at the jetty while watching the boats, fishermen, and dolphins.
She will be deeply missed by her husband: Gaylord Johnston, Warsaw; their two children: Nancy Corriveau, Wake Forest, N.C.; and Thomas Johnston, Rochester, N.Y.; one granddaughter: Dustin Cotterman, Rolesville, N.C.; two great-grandchildren: Aiden and Kaylee Cotterman, Rolesville, N.C.; two sisters: Patricia Tarvin; Carol Reed, both of Fort Myers, Fla.; and one brother: George (Dixie) Houck, Warsaw. She is dearly loved by many nieces; nephews; family; and friends from all over the world.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw. Her funeral service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, Warsaw, and officiated by Pastor Tim Kumfer. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.
Memorial donations in Sue’s name may be directed to Warsaw Church of God, Warsaw, and would be appreciated by the family.
