Changes Coming To Warsaw Trash Collection
WARSAW — Changes are coming to Warsaw’s trash pickup process and Mayor Joe Thallemer wants residents to know what their options are. By spring, residents will receive new, complimentary trash bins and all they have to do is decide what size they want.
Tags will be attached to residents’ garbage bins this week, asking them to select a size and note their address. Then, around April or May, the new bins will be delivered. For residents who wish, the city will also haul away their old garbage bins at the time of delivery.
Thallemer added that anyone who is out of town this week or who misses filling out the tag can contact the Warsaw Street Department with their address and preferred bin size.
The current maximum size allowed is 32 gallons. The new bins will come in two sizes: 64 gallons or 96 gallons, double or triple the capacity. Thallemer noted the current size is out of concern for employee safety. However, Warsaw’s garbage trucks will now be equipped with automated arms that will pick up and dump the bins, allowing them to be larger and heavier.
For those unsure of which size to select, Thallemer offered a guideline: For singles or couples, he said, the 65-gallon bins should be more than adequate. For larger families, he recommends the 96-gallon bins. Ultimately, however, the decision is up to each resident.
Residents who recycle, he added, should also find the smaller size adequate.
Those wishing to keep their old bins can do so, Thallemer said, however because of the way the trucks will be equipped, the city will no longer be able to pick these up.
Thallemer also noted that, due to the size of the trucks, it is best to set the bins curbside, rather than in the alleyways. For residents with corner lots, the bins can be placed on either curbside, depending on which is most convenient for the homeowner.
