Walpole Honored With Player Of The Week Nod
INDIANAPOLIS – Whitko junior Nate Walpole poured in 44 points in a game, leading the honorees in the IBCA/Subway Player of the Week program for the week of Jan. 18-23.
Walpole is joined by North Central junior Kris Wilkes, Bloomington South senior Tucker Blackwell, South Bend St. Joseph junior Nicole Konieczny, Muncie Central senior Jayla Scaife and East Central senior Allie McCool as recipients in the recognition program coordinated by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association.
Walpole and Konieczny are respective boys and girls winners for District 1, Wilkes and Scaife are recipients for District 2, and Blackwell and McCool collected accolades for District 3.
The 6-0 Walpole averaged 36.5 points over two games for Whitko. He started his week with 29 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 57-54 loss to Adams Central. Walpole then unloaded 44 points plus three rebounds, four assists and two steals in a 69-68 setback to Northfield. Over two games, Walpole converted 27 field goals, including 11 3-pointers, and eight free throws for the Wildcats.
Konieczny, a 5-8 guard, propelled South Bend St. Joseph to a pair of impressive victories. The SMU recruit opened with 24 points, 10 rebounds, one assist and two steals in a 60-44 decision over Divine Savior (Wis.). Konieczny also produced 19 points, three rebounds, one assist and three steals as the Indians edged Penn 50-49. In two games, she sank 15-of-24 field goals, 6-of-10 3-pointers and 7-of-7 free throws.
