WARSAW — Our community is filled with talented young people. A trip to a middle school or high school play or a trip to a Wagon Wheel, Jr. production would add credence to this observation. Homeschoolers occasionally present a theatrical offering, and local churches see young people in front of their congregations as they illustrate a point or provide entertainment. I once attended a neighborhood talent show; those kids were fantastic! Some of them weren’t even of school age yet.
Classes and casual practices and get-togethers can help to hone skills for children who enjoy performing in front of an audience, even for those who are shy in other situations. And the Warsaw Community Public Library has resources to assist in the process.
Children’s Services stocks books such as “You’ve Got Talent” by Andrea Mills and “Acting Skills” by Stephanie Turnbull. These are in the non-fiction section. Other offerings include “Putting on a Play: The Young Playwright’s Guide to Scripting, Directing, and Performing”, several readers’ theater scripts with guides, and a script by Moira Butterfield about the story of Little Red Riding Hood.
For those looking for picture books on the subject, I’d suggest trying “Think Big!” by Elizabeth Garton Scanlon, the tale of an elementary school’s talent show, or “The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes” by Mark Pett. This delightful story for youngsters tells about 9-year-old Beatrice Bottomwell, who does everything just right until her school’s talent show. Then she fails in a very public fashion. What will she do now? Read it and find out.
Some kids who aren’t interested in performing for others enjoy the antics of thespians as they act out a slice of life. And their talents can be developed in other ways. Come in and find a book about something you love to do.
