Extension Office To Host Annual Seed Swap
WARSAW — Interested in trying some new seeds for 2016? Have seeds that you saved from last year’s garden or flowers? Do you want to learn how to save seeds? Then, you will want to plan on attending the second annual Northern Indiana Seed Swap on Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Purdue Extension Office at 202 W. Main St., Warsaw.
Doors open at 9 a.m. for registration until 10 a.m. The swap and educational presentations conclude at noon. Door prizes will also be given out at the conclusion of the swap.
The Seed Swap is free and open to the public who are interested in sharing seeds. This is a great opportunity to exchange seeds and try something new for 2016 without making a purchase! If you have saved seed from last season, please bring only heirloom or open pollinated seed. Commercial seed is acceptable as long as it is no more than one year old. Any type of seeds are welcome—flowers, vegetables, annuals, perennials, treated or untreated. All seeds must be in envelopes and clearly labeled.
Educational presentations will also be offered during the swap. The first session will cover an introduction on saving seeds of all types. Travis Trump will share garden gear and tips to try in 2016. Kelly Heckaman, Purdue Extension Educator, will discuss why it is important to do regular soil testing and how to improve soil health. Then there will be an open sharing session for all participants to ask questions and share what worked and what didn’t in 2015.
