Winter is the time for the annual snowman decorating contest for children at the Syracuse Library. The children’s department wants to have some bright decorations and to offer prizes for the most interesting snowman in a variety of age categories. Snowmen can be decorated using supplies at the library or taken home and returned for display and judging. The sunny room of the children’s area might be a fun break and a way to get out for a bit.
Take a book home. The library is closing on Monday, Jan. 18 ,in honor of the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. The civil rights movement was a defining point in the history of the United States during the 1960s. Stories from that time have been retold in fiction books and through histories and biographies. The newest is the story of Malcolm X, a boy growing up black in Flint Michigan and his formative years before becoming a human-rights leader, in X a Novel, by Ilyasah Shabazz. A selection of related books has been brought together for reading enlightenment.
People are sitting and visiting while they learn or share their knitting knowledge. Children meet at 4 p.m. and adults can spend time from 5:30 p.m. until closing each Thursday. Want to give it a try? The library has yarn and hooks and needles.
Book Clubs
The young adult book club is meeting at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, to bring good luck into the library’s New Year by searching for all the bad spirits hiding in the book shelves. Food is also part of the celebration and sweet treats will be presented. Teens in middle school and high school are invited to drop in to meet other teens that like books, movies, fan fiction, or writing.
Food from Fiction, the adult book club for finding good recipes in stories, is meeting this winter at 1 p.m. third Thursdays of the month. The Jan. 21 meeting is to talk about the writing of mystery writer, Laura Childs. The main book the group will look at is “Scones and Bones”, a Tea Shop Mystery set in Charleston. Besides sampling some scones and tea, the group will hear the surprising biography of this best-selling author.
