Couples Tie The Knot At Times Square With Millions As Wedding Guests
NEW YORK, N.Y. — Alfredo and Monica Hernandez are celebrating the new year as the official “First Couple of 2016,” as the winners of the search by George Zimmer’s Generation Tux.
America voted and the couple received the most votes to tie the knot on the main stage in Times Square on New Year’s Eve, with Zimmer as their officiant and the world as their wedding guests.
As the official tuxedo of Times Square New Year’s Eve, Generation Tux was on hand as the ball dropped in New York City, helping revelers – and the two finalist couples – kick off 2016 in style. Generation Tux CEO and founder George Zimmer, whose decades of experience in the tuxedo and suit business have played a role in thousands of weddings worldwide, officiated the marriage of both the first couple and the runner up couple live in Times Square.
The couple signed their marriage certificate and shared their first kiss as husband and wife at the stroke of midnight.
“At Generation Tux, we believe that weddings and New Year’s Eve are two of the most magical moments in people’s lives,” said Zimmer of the event. “With the search for the ‘First Couple of 2016,’ we wanted to bring together both of these moments in one magical evening, and to kick off a new American tradition that we hope will last for years to come. We are so happy for both sets of newlyweds and to partake in this historical New Year’s moment.”
The “First Couple of 2016” contest invited couples to submit videos sharing their love story and why they deserve a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to exchange vows in front of millions of people in an iconic and unforgettable setting on the most celebrated day of the year in New York City’s legendary Times Square.
After the field was narrowed to two couples, the public was invited to vote on which couple would claim the winning spot.
Winning couple Alfredo and Monica, from Miami, Fla., locked eyes at a party many years ago and felt an immediate connection. Alfredo’s surprise proposal was larger-than-life, complete with a choreographed routine by the CenterStage cheer squad, where Monica is a full-time coach. As the winning couple, they will receive a seven-night, luxury honeymoon experience at Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort, Cancun, a AAA Four Diamond, award-winning Palace Resorts hotel and the official honeymoon partner of the First Couple of 2016.
Runner-up couple Alexander and Michael, from Atlanta, Ga., fell in love more than 10 years ago and knew they were ready to take the next step as soon as marriage was declared legal for everyone. Alexander popped the question with a surprise proposal at an Atlanta Pride event and both were thrilled to come to Times Square for New Year’s Eve and their wedding. As the runner-up couple, they will receive a four-day, three-night, all inclusive getaway to Moon Palace Golf and Spa Resort, Cancun.
