Top-Ranked St. Xavier Crushes Grace
CHICAGO – Grace’s women’s basketball team was unable to give No. 1 St. Xavier its first loss of the season on Monday, falling 96-50 on the road.
The Lady Lancers (5-9) were unable to find a defensive answer to the high-powered Cougars (15-0), giving up at least 22 points in three of the four quarters.
Grace was outscored 29-13 in the first quarter, and matters got worse in the second quarter as SXU went into halftime with a 58-20 advantage. The Cougars made 61 percent of their field goals, including 7-of-12 from the 3-point line.
The second half was noticeably improved for the Lady Lancers. Grace was only outscored by eight points over the final 20 minutes, but the damage was already done.
Five of Grace’s 3-pointers came in the second half, and Grace had assists on eight of its 11 made field goals after halftime.
Sarah Feasby was Grace’s leading producer with nine points and 10 rebounds. Kelsie Peterson had eight points and two assists, and Maycee Davis added seven points and two assists off the bench.
Brooke Sugg buried two 3’s, and Catherine Weaver, Lauren Godfrey and Jenna Kieper also hit triples. Haley Richardson tallied 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 blocks.
The Lady Lancers stay in Chicago for a matchup on Tuesday against Robert Morris, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25.
