First Christmas Full Moon Since 1977
INDIANAPOLIS — Expect a rare sight in the sky overhead this Christmas, and no, we’re not talking about Santa Claus.
NASA says the last full moon of the year will appear on Christmas Day.
Its peak should occur just after 6 a.m. Eastern time.
The rare sight is called a full cold moon because it shows up during the beginning of winter.
A full moon hasn’t appeared on Christmas Day since 1977, and it won’t happen again for another 19 years.
While you are gazing up at the Christmas moon, take note that a NASA spacecraft is currently orbiting earth’s moon.
NASA’S lunar reconnaissance orbiter has been investigating the lunar surface since 2009.
