Whitko No. 4, Valley No. 6 In Hoops Polls
The area is well represented in the latest ICGSA high school girls basketball polls for Hoosier State.
Whitko is the highest rated squad among the IFN coverage area as the Wildcats checked in at No. 4 in this week’s Class 2-A poll. Whitko moved up a spot from last week despite being routed 56-32 on Saturday night in a key Three Rivers Conference game at Tippecanoe Valley. The Wildcats are 10-2 on the season with losses to the Vikings and to Huntington North, which is 10-3 on the season.
Valley checks in at No. 6 in the Class 3-A poll by the coaches this week. The Vikings are 11-1 after their win over Whitko Saturday night. Valley, the Class 3-A state runner-up last season, has won six in a row since a 50-44 loss to Westfield back on Nov. 28 in the championship game of their own Thanksgiving tournament. Westfield is ranked No. 7 in Class 4-A.
Undefeated Rochester is No. 1 in Class 2-A this week with Oregon-Davis right behind at No. 2. The Zebras are 11-0, while the Bobcats are 9-0.
Penn is ranked No. 3 in Class 4-A as the Kingsmen are 13-0 on the season. South Bend St. Joseph is No. 4 in the Class 3-A poll. The Indians, who are 10-0, will play in the Warsaw tournament on Dec. 29.
Argos is No. 3 in the Class 1-A poll. The Dragons, who are coached by former Valley coach Gary Teel, are off to a 10-0 start.
The top ranked squads this week are Homestead in 4-A, Princeton in 3-A, Rochester in 2-A and Jac-Cen-Del in 1-A.
Undefeated Princeton is led by senior star Jackie Young. The Notre Dame recruit is averaging 39 points-per-game through the first 11 games for her defending state championship team. Young currently ranks No. 4 in career scoring in state history for girls players with 2,719 points. Former South Bend Washington and Notre Dame star and current WNBA player Skylar Diggins is No. 3 with 2,790 points with Stephanie White at No. 2 with 2,869. The top scorer in state history for the ladies is former Wawasee High School star Shanna Zolman with 3,085 points.
